Jasprit Bumrah put up a stellar performance with the ball in Brisbane as he picked up yet another five-wicket haul. However, his achievement was overshadowed by a moment of controversy when former England cricketer and current commentator Isa Guha, on Sunday, made a racially sensitive statement on the India pacer.
It all happened on Day 2 of the third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between India and Australia at the Gabba when Guha passed the remark after Bumrah got India off to a stunning start in the first innings with two quick wickets.
Speaking on Fox Cricket about Bumrah’s impact, Guha said: “He’s the MVP, isn’t he. The Most Valuable Primate. Jasprit Bumrah, he is the one that is going to do all the talking for India and why so much focus was on him in the build up to this Test match and whether he would be fit.”
Brett Lee, who was with Guha on air, did not respond to her comments but the episode went viral on social media and netizens were quick to point it out on X.
“Did Isa Guha just call Bumrah the most valuable primate? Or am I hearing things?” wrote one user on X.
“Calling Jasprit Bumrah the MVP but then breaking it down to a ‘Most Valuable Primate’ a few minutes ago was something else,” added another.
“Isa Guha is getting cancelled. She just called Bumrah the MVP, ‘most valuable primate’,” pointed an X user.
“Monkeygate! Isa just called bumrah a primate,” said another.
Earlier, in 2008, former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was embroiled in a 'monkeygate' controversy with late Aussie allrounder Andrew Symonds.
