The Champions Trophy is set to return after 8 years in 2025, as Pakistan were scheduled to be the hosts of the tournament. However, the future of the tournament was up in the air after India refused to travel to their neigbouring nation citing security issues. The impasse regarding the mega ODI tournament seems to have finally ended as according to reports the tournament is set to take place in the hybrid model, where India will play their matches in a different country. However, trouble within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) refuses to die down.
According to a report by IANS, some members of the PCB are unhappy with the way Pakistan accepted the decision regarding the Champions Trophy 2025 hybrid model. This is especially because of the compensations that PCB were offered. Some members said that PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi should not have fallen prey to the tactics of the ICC.
What Are Compensations Offered By ICC To PCB?
According to reports, Pakistan have been offered to host an ICC women's tournament after 2027 in return for accepting the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy 2025. The ICC has also said that the India vs. Pakistan match in the T20 World Cup 2026 will take place in Colombo as Pakistan will not travel to India for the tournament. However, no monetary compensation has been offered to the PCB.
Former Pakistan Players Unhappy
Many former Pakistan stars have expressed displeasure in PCB for accepting the terms of the ICC regarding the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy. Rashid Latif said on his YouTube channel that hosting a women's ICC tournament could not be a compensation for Pakistan not fully hosting the Champions Trophy 2025.
Former Pakistan batter Basit Ali said that this is being done so that Pakistan are forced to travel to India during the T20 World Cup 2026.
"Now it is being said that in 2027 or 2028, a women's World Cup will be given to Pakistan. Everybody will say, 'waah ji waah! This is great, not one but two ICC events (in Pakistan)!' But what's the point of events like these? It's being done so that in 2026, the Pakistan team will travel to India and the Indian women's team will then come to Pakistan. The broadcasters won't suffer any losses," Ali said on his YouTube Channel.
