Mohammed Amir Retires From International Cricket For Second Time (Source: PTI)
Pakistan pacer Mohammed Amir announced retirement from international cricket for the second time. Amir, who announced retirement in 2019, took a u-turn on the decision and made himself available for the T20 World Cup 2024. Amir was drafted into the Pakistan squad for the showpiece event, but Pakistan had a horrible outing and bowed out of the tournament without qualifying for the second round. Amir's decision came a day after Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim announced his retirement from international cricket. Imad, like Amir, came out of retirement to play in the T20 World Cup. Following a shambolic show, the cricketers were dropped from the Pakistan team, and their careers were all but over.
Amir played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 62 T20Is for Pakistan since making his international debut in June 2009 and accounted for 271 wickets across formats. The highlight of Amir's career was the 2017 Champions Trophy final where he rattled the Indian top order, taking the wickets of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shikhar Dhawan, and leading Pakistan to an emphatic win.
“It has been a great honour to play for Pakistan across all three formats. I know this is a difficult decision, but I feel this is the right time for the next generation to take the baton and elevate Pakistan cricket to new heights," Amir said in an official release issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
“I would like to thank the PCB for always extending the much-needed support over the years and I look forward to watching the team excel. I would also like to thank Pakistan fans for always supporting me throughout my career," he added.
Meanwhile, Imad made his international debut in May 2015 at home against Zimbabwe and went on to play for Pakistan in 55 ODIs and 75 T20I games.
