Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has said that Yashasvi Jaiswal has a calibre similar to that of batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, adding that his temperament is very similar to that of Gavaskar. He said that Jaiswal's technique and hunger for runs match up to Gavaskar and the youngster, who has done the hard yards, can strive for greatness.
Jaiswal has been touted as one of the best batters of the current generation and he lived up to the name with his 161-run knock in the first Test against Australia in Perth last month.
Speaking on Star Sports, Bangar highlighted Jaiswal's strong techniques and his brilliant mental approach to the game.
“Two things [make Jaiswal special]. One is that he is extremely sound technically and that means that he’s got a great foundation for him to work his way up. Then the temperament part [has been there since] very early in his career," Bangar said.
"Cricket means a lot to him. He has worked hard to be where he is and his hunger for big scores defines him as a batter," Bangar added.
The former India batting coach then said that someone like Gavaskar had a calibre similar to Jaiswal. The youngster, ranked fourth in the Test batter rankings, has already made a huge mark in international cricket, with over 1500 runs, including four hundreds and eight half-centuries in just 16 Tests.
Jaiswal's match-winning innings of 161 in the second innings of the first Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy further cemented his place as one of the integral members of the Test squad.
While his 161 was a standout knock, Jaiswal has struggled with scores of 0, 45, 0, and 24 in the series and it needs to be seen how he fares in Brisbane if the weather permits enough time for him to bat.
