Cricketing legends Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border, after whom the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy is named, have predicted the final scoreline of the five-match Test series. With the series tied 1-all and the weather predictions for the third Test in Brisbane looking bleak, the two former cricketers came up with different scorelines.
Gavaskar picked India to win the last two Tests in Melbourne and Sydney, bagging the series 3-1, taking into account that Brisbane is either a washout or ends in a draw.
On the other hand, Border picked Australia to finally finish on a lucky note after losing the last two home series 2-1 against India. He said that the hosts would this time win the series 2-1. Watch the video here:
The biennial India vs Australia Test series was named after Gavaskar and Border in 1996-97 when India won the one-off Test at home. The four-match series started in 1997-98, which India won 3-1 at home.
India's batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has the most runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with 3262 runs in 34 matches at a stunning average of 56.24.
Meanwhile, Gavaskar suggested that the Indian team should forget their defeat in the second Test and focus on the remaining three matches.
"A quick turnaround in the fortunes is needed for Rohit Sharma and his team. They have to forget what happened in Adelaide and look at the series as the best of three matches. In every defeat, there are positives, but for the Indians, the only plus was Nitish Kumar Reddy showing he is made for stern battles," Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Sydney Morning Herald.
Local hero Usman Khawaja and young Nathan McSweeney displayed sound defensive technique against ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah but persistent rain played havoc with the opening day of the third Test, permitting less than 14 overs of play in which Australia scored 28/0 against India in Brisbane.
