India batter Cheteshwar Pujara has said that India scored at least 70-75 runs less than what they should have in the first innings of the second Test in Adelaide and picking up just one wicket by the end of the day pushed the match in Australia's favour. He picked India's 'wrong' bowling game plan for Travis Head as one of the factors for the 10-wicket loss.
India skipper Rohit Sharma and ace batter Virat Kohli's never-ending technical problems against both pace and spin have set the alarm bells ringing as Indian batters capitulated twice in just 81 overs to lose the 'pink ball' Test against Australia by a comprehensive 10-wicket margin on the third day in Adelaide.
During an interaction on Star Sports, Pujara was asked the one reason for India's defeat. Pujara was one of India's best batters in Australia over the last two tours.
"When you lose a match, it's not one reason. There are many reasons. Firstly, the batting in the first innings. Fewer runs were scored there. 180 runs were scored when 250-275 should have been made. After that, when we bowled on the same day, we got only one wicket," Pujara said.
"We were bowling under the lights. The Aussie batters batted very well. We will have to praise them, but along with that, the bowling could have been much better. We could have picked two or three wickets there. After that, the game plan against Travis Head was wrong," Pujara added.
The India batter said that the visitors didn't bowl enough bouncers against Head, permitting him to score on the offside.
"The tactics could have been better. You could have bowled more bouncers against him. We shouldn't have given so many runs on the off-side. There was a mistake there," Pujara said.
India and Australia will now face in the third Test in Brisbane from Saturday, December 14.
