If reports are to be believed the New York Mets and Juan Soto have agreed to a huge $765 million, 15-year contract. As per the Associated Press, the deal will be signed once Soto passes the medical Test with the Major League Baseball side.
Soto's deal with the Mets will eclipse Shohei Ohtani's $700 million deal, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Soto-Mets deal could surpass $805 million if certain conditions are met. The contract will also allow Soto to opt out of the deal after 2029 if the MLS side doesn't increase his annual salary by $4 million, to $55 million from an initial $51 million.
Soto will also get a hefty $75 million signing bonus and there are no deferred payments, unlike Ohtani's contract with the Dodgers. Should the development be made official, the length of the deal will also be the highest, leapfrogging Fernando Tatis Jr's 13 year contract with the San Diego Padres.
The New York Yankees did try their best to snatch Soto with a 16-year, $760 million offer which would have guaranteed a $47.5 million average annual value. But the 26 year old must have known his value and decided to say yes to the Mets which is by far the largest contract in the history of sports.
In 2018 Soto made his debut in the MLB with the Washington Nationals and led them to the World Series title the next year when he hit .282 with 34 homers and 110 RBIs. He is one of the most high profile free agents in baseball currently and the Mets are expected to have a major boost after the player officially puts pen to paper.
Soto has a .285 batting average with 201 homers, 592 RBIs and 769 walks over seven major league seasons.
