India's World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has said that every cricketer should try and support former India batter Vinod Kambli. Still, more than anyone, Kambli will need to help himself to ensure a better future for himself. He added that Kambli will need to make an effort to overcome the crisis he finds himself in and address his health problems.
Kambli, 52, has been struggling with alcohol-related and other health issues. He appeared frail during a public event, held in memory of legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar. Since then, several former cricketers have come out in support to help him in every manner possible.
Expressing unhappiness over Kambli's condition, Kapil Dev highlighted the requirement for self-help besides external help.
"We should all try to support him. But more than us, he has to support himself. We can't look after anybody if that person can't look after himself," Kapil said while speaking at the launch of the golf tournament, Vishwa Samudra Open.
"All the cricketers feel very sad about what we have seen. I wish his closest friends could try to get him some help, to look after himself, to go back to rehab. People do get this illness, but you have to get back to rehab," Kapil added.
India's legendary 1983 World Cup-winning cricket team has stepped forward to support Kambli in overcoming his struggles.
12 years back, Kambli underwent angioplasty to treat blocked arteries, followed by a heart attack in 2013. His struggles with alcohol addiction have led him to several stints of rehab, affecting his overall health and well-being and his public stature has dropped as well.
In 17 Tests, Kambli scored 1084 runs at a stunning average of 54.2, with four hundreds to his name. In 97 ODIs, he scored 2477 runs with two hundreds. In first-class cricket, he scored 9965 runs in 129 matches, at a stunning average of 59.67. He last played for India in the final of the Coca-Cola Champions Trophy in 2000, where he was dismissed for a 13-ball 5.
Kambli continued playing first-class cricket till 2004 and his last appearance was in a Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh, where he was leading Mumbai and scored 68 and 24. He was replaced by Sairaj Bahutule as the captain in the next game and never played again.
