'Rishabh Pant Can Bring India Back On Day 3 But He Won't': Sunil Gavaskar's Bold Remark Goes Viral (Source: AP)

India find themselves in massive trouble in the second Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. Having conceded a lead of 157 runs in the first innings, the Aussies reduced India to 128-5 at stumps on Day 2. India trail Australia by 29 runs and they don't have much batting to follow. Rishabh Pant and Nitish Reddy are at the crease, with R Ashwin to follow. If India have to claw back in the Test, Rishabh Pant will have to play a magical innings.
Pant came out with a positive approach on Day 2 and remained not out at 28 in 25 balls. Facing his first delivery, Pant charged down the ground and whacked Scott Boland for a boundary. It's not new for Pant to surprise teams with his gameplay but with the team struggling at 73-3, India great Sunil Gavaskar wasn't pleased with Pant's risky approach.
In an indirect dig at Pant, Gavaskar said it is easier for players to play that way because they know even if they are dropped from the Test team, they have IPL to fall back on.
"Very entertaining, no question about it. But you mustn't forget, in the old days, there was no alternative to Test cricket; if you didn't play Test cricket, you went back to Ranji Trophy, you went back to club cricket, and that was it. When you have a cushion like the IPL, like the contract system, you can play this way. So what if you get dropped from the Indian team, you have the IPL," Gavaskar said in the post-match show on Star Sports after the end of Day 2 in Adelaide.
Gavaskar was then asked if Pant can bring India back in the game on Day 3 to which the legendary cricketer said it could happen but it won't. "Can he come out tomorrow and turn this back India's way?" asked Mark Nicholas. Gavaskar said, "He can but he won't."

Travis Head Decimates India

Meanwhile, India were once again on the receiving end of Travis Head's onslaught as he tormented India with a record 111-ball century. His knock ensured Australia posted 337 in the first innings and took a handy 157-run lead. Head was dropped twice during his knock and he made India pay by scoring vital runs.
