India skipper Rohit Sharma has joined former captains Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni in an embarrassing list after his team went down by 10 wickets to Australia in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide on Sunday, December 8. The mighty Aussies maintained their unblemished record in day-night Tests with an emphatic win against an out-of-sorts Indian team.
It was a tale of two shoddy batting efforts with the two senior-most players, Rohit and ace batter Virat Kohli looking well past their best. Ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah gave it all but lacked a potent bowling partner at the other end.
This was the shortest-ever Test between India and Australia in terms of deliveries bowled and the hurt would be a lot on Rohit's part. He has now lost four Tests in a row as captain, joining Kohli, Dhoni, Datta Gaekwad, Sachin Tendulkar and MAK Pataudi on the list.
Kohli, during his tenure as a Test captain, lost two Tests in New Zealand in February 2020, followed by the infamous pink-ball Adelaide Test of that year and then to England at home in Chennai in 2021.
Beginning the day at 128/5, rookie allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy's (42) cavalier approach prevented a second consecutive innings loss under lights in Adelaide as India were bowled out for a paltry 175, worse than their first innings effort of 180.
The required 19 runs were a formality which was achieved in the fourth over. India's second innings lasted just 37 overs, with captain Pat Cummins using the short ball to bag 5/57. He dismissed KL Rahul, counterpart Rohit, a set Nitish Reddy, Ravichandran Ashwin and Harshit Rana for a 12-ball duck.
After a facile 295-run victory over Australia in Perth, the Indian batting unit won't be too amused to learn that they survived 81 overs across both innings, which isn't even a whole day of Test batting.
