Captain Annalie Longo has willed her Wellington Phoenix to their second victory of the A-League season, scoring both goals in their 2-1 surprise over highly rated Brisbane Roar at Porirua.

The back-to-back wins — separated by a bye week — have catapulted the Phoenix women from the bottom of the competition ladder to mid-table, now in seventh and one place outside a playoff spot for now. They also sit just three points behind second-placed Brisbane in a congested table, with three games still to come this weekend.

Longo put the home side ahead in the 35th minute, when she stole a weak pass between Roar defenders, took a return pass from English forward Olivia Fergusson and slotted past keeper Olivia Sekany to open the scoring.

Wellington seemed destined to take that advantage into the halftime break, but conceded an equaliser to Brisbane midfielder Emily Grace Pringle in the first minute of added time, before turning to play into a substantial wind for the second half.

With those conditions at their back, it seemed only a matter of time before the league high flyers capitalised, but they struggled to adjust, often playing too strongly for their forwards to chase down.

Instead, Longo pounced again in the 69th minute, taking a pass outside the penalty area, dribbling right, then left, before driving a left-footed effort that held up in the wind and eluded Sekany at the near post.

"Obviously elated," reflected Longo. "We had to fight and battle hard for that win, and wanted to keep the momentum from last week — it's nice to get another three points.

"We obviously knew the wind would be a factor, and we were fortunate enough to get the turnover and slot it in.

"With the second one, we had been talking about having more chances and more shots — if you don't shoot, you can't score. I kind of scuffed it and was a little bit lucky, but we needed a bit of luck, so it was nice."

Wellington began the season with three defeats, but have turned their fortunes around in recent weeks.

"We spoke heavily about creating more opportunities in front of goal," said Longo. "Today, we had to be defensively hard, we needed to be more proactive and get more bodies in the box.

"Defensively, we were excellent and the wind was a huge factor, but three points and back-to-back wins for us ... a very good win for us."
