Did Mohammed Siraj break Shoaib Akhtar's record? Photo: X
Mohammed Siraj gave it all during the first day of the Adelaide Test match against Australia but he remained empty-handed. The right-arm pacer bowled beautifully and only spent 29 runs in his 10-over spell. But he didn't get a wicket with the pink ball. Siraj, who bowled tirelessly on the opening day, became the talk of the town due to a technical glitch.
The viewers were left surprised when the official broadcaster showed that Siraj had broken Shoaib Akhtar's record by bowling the fastest delivery in international cricket. The speed gun recorded a speed of 181.6 kmph. But that wasn't the case.
ICC would have posted about it on its social media channels if Siraj had broken Akhtar's record. The fans can expect an official statement from Cricket Australia or the broadcaster regarding this glitch.
For the unversed, Akhtar has been holding the record for bowling the quickest delivery in international cricket since 2003. The Pakistan legend etched his name in history books when he bowled a 161.3 kmph delivery against England in 2003. This elite record has remained untouched.
Australia dominate day 1
Australia dominated the first day of the fixture and finished the day with a total of 86/1 on the board. They only trail by 94 runs. Bolstered by Rohit Sharma's comeback, India had a forgettable day with the bat and they got bowled out for 180.
None of the batsmen managed to breach the 50-run mark. Nitish Reddy, who scored 42 off 54 balls, top-scorer for India. KL Rahul (37) and Shubman Gill (31) also made vital contributions. R Ashwin scored 22 off as many balls.
Mitchell Starc shone with the ball and took a six-fer. He dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal on the first ball of the match. Pat Cummins and Scott Boland scalped two wickets each. India are 1-0 ahead in the series.
