The Mumbai cricket team led by Shreyas Iyer created history at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday (December 5) after defeating Andhra Pradesh in the high-scoring thriller in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) as secured their place in the semi-finals.
After winning the toss and chosing to bowl first, Mumbai conceded a huge total of 229. KS Bharat was the star of the show for Andhra with a knock of 93 in just 53 balls. Ashwin Hebbar (52 in 29 balls) and skipper Ricky Bhui (68 in 31 balls) played quick-fire knocks to power Andhra to a big score.
Under-fire Prithvi Shaw gave Mumbai a quick start in the chase with a 15-ball 34 while skipper Shreyas Iyer made 25 runs in 11 balls to continue the momemtum. Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav suffered a rare failure as he deperated after making four runs in five balls.
However, Ajinkya Rahane's class stood out with an incredible knock of 95 in 54 balls which ensured Mumbai remained ahead of the required rate. Shivam Dube once again turned the momemtum of the game in the middle order with a 18-ball 34. Suryansh Shedge proved to the difference maker with an unbeaten knock of 30 in eight balls at a strike-rate of 375 which included two boundaries and three sixes.
Mumbai won the match by four wickets with three balls to spare. This was Andhra's first defeat of the tournament.

Mumbai Create History

As a result of their incredible feat, Mumbai set a massive all-time record for the highest successful run-chase in the history of SMAT. The 2022 champions broke Pondicherry's record (227) which was also set against Andhra in 2021.

Mumbai's incredible feat comes on the same day when Baroda posted a huge total of 349 against Sikkim at the Emerald High School Ground in Indore, which is not just the highest score in the tournament's history but also the world record for the highest team total in any T20 match.
Mumbai will now face Vidarbha in the quarterfinal on Wednesday (December 11) at Alur, while Andhra will face Uttar Pradesh in the pre-quarters at Bengaluru on Monday (December 9).
