Joe Root shattered plenty of records during the Test series against Sri Lanka and played a key role in England's 2-1 win. Apart from becoming the sixth-highest run-scorer in Tests, Root also achieved the record of becoming the England batsman with most Test tons. He is also the only England batsman to score 50 centuries in international cricket.
Root piled up 375 runs in three Tests against Sri Lanka and slammed 2 centuries. He was bestowed with the Player of the Series award for his heroics.
Root, who now has five Player of the Series awards, has overtaken Ben Stokes and Kapil Dev in an elite list. He is now ahead of the two legends in the list of players to win most POS awards.
Another Player of the Series award will see him overtake Sachin Tendulkar. The Master Blaster won the award five times. Muttiah Muralitharan tops the list of players to win most Player of the Series awards. He won the award 11 times.
The Sri Lanka legend is followed by R Ashwin, who has won the award 10 times. With nine awards, Jacques Kallis sits next. He is followed by Imran Khan, who won the award 8 times. Richard Hadlee and Shane Warne also won 8 POS awards. Wasim Akram and Shivnarine Chanderpaul won 7 POS awards. Root still has a long career ahead of him and he can win 2-3 more POS awards.
England fail to whitewash SL
England were favourites to whitewash Sri Lanka in the three-match Test series but they lost the third game by 8 wickets. The visiting team chased down the target of 219 to win the game. England won the first two Tests but they struggled in the third game. It was the only fixture where Root failed to play a big knock.
