India pacer Mohammed Siraj took charge as the Telangana Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). Siraj assumed the new role after meeting with Telangana Director General of Police Jitender and other senior officials at the DGP office. The development comes after Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced that Siraj would be granted a Group-I government post given his performance in India's historic T20 World Cup win in 2024. Along with the DSP post, the state government also allotted 600 square yards of land to Siraj at Road No. 78, Jubilee Hills.
Siraj's contribution to Indian cricket has been significant. He came to limelight after a stunning performance in the 2020-2021 tour to Australia. In the absence of lead pacers, Siraj took charge as India's spearhead and played a crucial role in India's emphatic win Down Under. He ended as India's leading wicket-taker in the series, taking 13 wickets in 3 matches.
Siraj showed remarkable consistency across formats and soon became India's all-format bowler. Siraj so far has played 28 Tests, 44 ODIs and 16 T20Is, taking 76, 71, and 14 wickets respectively.
Meanwhile, Siraj recently played the Test series against Bangladesh but was rested for the T20I series against the same team. Siraj will play a massive role when India play New Zealand and Australia in the following series thus he was given a break to manage his workload. There are reports that Mohammed Shami might not be fit in time for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy thus Siraj will have a massive role to support Jasprit Bumrah. How Bumrah and Siraj fare on the tour could well decided India's performance in the five match Test series in Australia.
