- Franchise officials seek clarity from BCCI regarding order of retentions
- Only 20 days remain before 31 October deadline for franchise-wise retention list
The BCCI finally announced the IPL 2025 mega auction retention rules in September but there seems to be a big confusion on the retention slots and the order of the retentions. With only 20 days remaining ahead of the 31 October deadline for the franchises to submit their retention picks to the BCCI, some teams haven't been able to finalise their retentions amid confusion surrounding the rules.
The IPL player regulations 2025-27 key points were shared by the BCCI with all IPL teams and in the six-page document, the apex board has mentioned several details related to retentions, players fees and salary cap, match fees introduced recently, performance pay and other rules related to the league.
According to a report in the Times of India, many teams have been left stuck on the first page of the document itself. The first page states the valuation of five players and the uncapped player. The first retained player will be valued at INR 18 crore, the second one at INR 14 crore, third one at INR 11 crore. The fourth retention will again cost INR 18 crore, while the fifth retention will be for INR 14 crore.
The footnote mentioned on the document has left IPL teams confused, as it read, "Retention deduction of overall amount instead of fee per player, in this case of 75 Crs irrespective of what amount is paid to 5 players. If the total amount exceeds 75 Crs then the actual amount to be deducted. In case the amount is less than 75 Crs then 75 Crs to be deducted."
The confusion stems from the fact that it was previously thought a franchise has to follow the order mentioned by BCCI to retain its players.
One franchise official was quoted expressing concern about the order of the price tag. The official couldn't understand if the total retentions exceeded INR 75 crore, whether the remaining sum would be deducted from the salary cap.
The IPL team official urged the BCCI to provide clarity on what is the biggest piece of the puzzle and he informed that the franchises had already reached out to the apex board to get an explanation. Another franchise official expressed concern about the retention rules, urging the BCCI to provide a 30-40 page document to make the rules simplified.
