Will Virat Kohli return as India's captain for a Test match against Australia? Will the former India captain once again don the captain's hat? A post on X, claiming Virat Kohli's return to captaincy, left the fans surprised. India are likely to have a stand-in captain for a Test match against Australia as Rohit Sharma could miss one game due to personal reasons.
With the BCCI not appointing a vice-captain for the home series against Bangladesh, there is no clear word on Rohit's deputy. Amid this, the post on X left the fans confused and surprised. So is Virat returning to captaincy?
No, the post claiming Virat's return to captaincy is fake. Virat Kohli is not returning as India's captain for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. There are reports that Rohit could miss a game against Australia, which can see India having a new captain.
According to a report by EspnCricinfo; Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill are two frontrunners for the top job. Bumrah has been part of the leadership group in past and he also led India in a Test match against England in 2022. The selection committee surprisingly decided against naming him the vice-captain for the Bangladesh series.
Shubman's recent rise in international cricket makes him another favourite for the top job. The right-handed batsman was India's T20I captain for the Zimbabwe series. He was named the vice-captain of the ODI team and is now the deputy leader in white-ball cricket.
Shubman was expected to be named Rohit's deputy for the Bangladesh Test series but that didn't happen. The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee is expected to give a clear update on the vice-captain when they announce the squad for the New Zealand Test series.
The three-match India-New Zealand Test series kicks off on October 16. After three Tests, India will fly to Australia for a five-match Test series Down Under. India won the past two Border-Gavaskar Trophies Down Under.
