KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian team will be watching the AUS vs PAK match closely
- India's T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal chances will rely on AUS vs PAK result
- A win for Australia would push Pakistan on the cusp of elimination
The Indian women's cricket team recently defeated Sri Lanka by 82 runs in a much-needed morale-boosting victory. The win kept India alive in the race for the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup semifinals, with Harmanpreet Kaur's side looking to finish in second place.
India are currently on 4 points, level with table toppers Australia who have a game in hand. The Aussies will face Pakistan who are in third place, two points behind India.
A win for Australia would take them to six points, and on the cusp of qualification to the semifinals, whereas India's match against Australia will then become a must-win game for the Women in Blue.
Furthermore, Harmanpreet Kaur and her team will be hoping that the Aussies can defeat Pakistan which would more or less eliminate Fatima Sana's side from the competition.
How AUS vs PAK match could impact the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal chances of the Indian team?
Ahead of Australia's meeting with Pakistan in Dubai on 11 October, the Aussies will know they have a simple task at hand. A win would essentially take them to the cusp of qualification to the semifinals, regardless of the result against India on 13 October.
A win against Pakistan would take Australia to 6 points, and Pakistan will remain at 2 points. They would then need to win against New Zealand on 14 October which would be a virtual quarterfinal match. After the defeat to Australia, Pakistan will be able to reach only 4 points if they beat New Zealand, India are already at four points, so it's an uphill task for the Fatima Sana's women to pip the Indian team on Net Run Rate (NRR).
Thus, a victory for Australia could complicate matters for Pakistan, but if Fatima Sana's team can cause an upset, it would blow open the group. Pakistan's victory over the Aussies would take them to four points, level with India, and then the Australia vs India match will become a straight virtual quarterfinal match for a place to reach the semifinals.
