Sourav Ganguly did not mince his words while reacting to the string of poor displays by the Pakistan cricket team in recent times. The former India captain's comments came just days after the Shan Masood-led outfit hit a historic low and lost a Test series at Bangladesh for the first time in history.
Pakistan's struggles in Test cricket have now been prolonged, as they have not won a home Test for more than three years and are on a winless run of 10 matches. However, their white-ball form in recent times has been no better, as they failed to reach the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Later, they faced further embarrassment under Babar Azam's captaincy as they suffered a first-round exit in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States of America.
Ganguly called upon stakeholders in Pakistan cricket to have a close look at what is going wrong while stating that the national team has a dearth of talent coming through. Ganguly stated that while Pakistani teams of old were blessed with some of the biggest names in world cricket while naming players like Wasim Akram, Javed Miandad among many, that is not the case anymore.
"I see a genuine dearth of talent in the country. Every time we think of Pakistan, we remember Miandad, Wasim, Waqar, Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Yousuf, and Younis Khan.
"That's the memory of Pakistan for us, but that doesn’t win matches in the modern generation of cricket. Every generation has to produce outstanding players to win, and when I look at Pakistan in world cricket -- I saw them in the West Indies World Cup, in India during the World Cup, and now after the Bangladesh series loss -- there is a dearth of talent in that country," said Ganguly at a promotional event in Kolkata as quoted by PTI.
"The people connected with the sport in Pakistan will have to look into it. I'm not saying this with disrespect. Pakistan of the old had some great cricketers, which I don't see in this squad," the former India captain further added.
The Pakistan Cricket Team will be next seen in action on October 7th when they host England in a three-match Test series in what will be a vital assignment for both teams in their dying hopes of reaching the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final.
